The short answer

Craften Roofing & Exteriors builds and repairs decks for homeowners across Chattanooga and Hamilton County, TN. We work in composite, including Trex, and in pressure-treated or cedar lumber, handling the permit, footings, framing, railings and stairs. Most decks are built in one to two weeks. Estimates are free and owner Bryan Casey designs and oversees each build.

Deck services

New deck construction. From a simple grilling platform off the kitchen to a multi-level deck on a sloped Chattanooga lot. We handle design, permits, footings, framing, decking, railings, stairs and lighting.

Deck repair. Loose railings, soft boards, a wobbly stair stringer, a ledger board pulling away from the house. We fix the structural issue first, then the surface.

Deck rebuilds and resurfacing. When the framing is sound but the boards and railings are shot, we can keep the structure and replace the surface with composite for a deck that looks new and needs almost no upkeep.

Signs your deck needs attention

  • Boards that feel spongy or flex underfoot
  • Railings that move when you lean on them
  • Rusted or missing joist hangers and fasteners
  • The ledger board where the deck meets the house is pulling away or shows rot
  • Cracked, splintered or cupped boards after years of sun
  • Stairs that shift or have loose treads

Built for sloped lots and Tennessee weather

A lot of Chattanooga yards fall away from the house. That is exactly where a deck earns its keep, and exactly where footings, posts and bracing need to be done right.

We design for the slope, and we build for the humidity that eats untreated wood in a few seasons.

Decks FAQ

Questions about building a deck here

Size, height, material and railing choices drive the cost. A pressure-treated deck costs the least up front; composite costs more but needs almost no maintenance. We give a free written estimate with a plan drawing.
Most new decks and structural rebuilds require a permit from the city or Hamilton County. We pull the permit and handle the paperwork and inspections as part of the job, and we tell you what your specific project needs before any work starts.
Most decks take one to two weeks including permits and inspections. Small platforms are at the short end; larger multi-level decks on a slope are at the long end.
If you plan to stay in the house and do not want to stain a deck every two years, composite. If budget is the priority or you like the look of real wood, pressure-treated or cedar.
Often. If the framing and ledger are sound, we can replace boards, railings and stairs and give you many more years. If the structure is compromised, we will show you why a rebuild is the safer choice.
Yes, and a lot of our work is exactly that. Sloped lots need deeper footings, taller posts and proper bracing, which we design into the plan rather than improvising on site.
